NPS GLAC Park Wide IT Infrastructure
A Million Acres of IT
At Glacier National Park, our team worked extensively with the park’s local staff and NPS’s Regional Project Managers to evaluate and improve the radio coverage throughout the parks entire 1,500+ square mile footprint. The radio system in the park supports the Fire, Law Enforcement, and Parkwide networks, and is an integral component to the communications and safety of staff and visitors year around.
In this effort, over 20 radio sites were identified as needing improvements. In some cases, a new site was established and required a full system activation including a modular structure, tower, power source, amplification equipment, and antennas. In others, there was a smaller refresh of specific radio equipment, improvements to power, improvements to structure, and/ or upgrades to the point-to-point/microwave/network components supporting the Radio Over Internet Protocol (ROIP) connection.
AE Design’s effort in this project was to define the project scope through onsite assessment and coordination and to secure funding for the parkwide update over the coming years. This would allow Glacier National Park to be a regional leader in establishing the NPS approach to radio distribution through mountainous terrain.
