Northglenn City Hall
Illuminating a Sence of Community
The new 32,600-square-foot Northglenn City Hall redefines municipal architecture with a visionary lighting design that seamlessly integrates sustainability, functionality, and aesthetics. As a key component in achieving CORE Green Building certification from the International Living Future Institute (ILFI), the lighting strategy plays a crucial role in supporting the project’s Net-Zero energy goals, environmental responsibility, and civic identity.
The lighting design for Northglenn City Hall embodies durability, timelessness, and efficiency. A refined approach emphasizing neutral colors, clean lines, and classic forms ensures the lighting complements the building’s architectural identity while maintaining longevity beyond passing trends. The design respects and enhances the natural beauty of the mass timber structure by carefully concealing fixtures and conduits, allowing the architectural elements to take center stage.
The building employs a state-of-the-art wireless control system, reducing material usage while enhancing occupant comfort. Integrated sensors in office spaces adjust lighting based on daylight availability, ensuring optimal energy efficiency and user adaptability. Dimmable fixtures throughout the facility provide flexibility for various uses, while keypad controls allow staff and maintenance teams to easily manage lighting settings. Exterior lighting follows the city’s dark sky standards, incorporating full cutoff fixtures to minimize uplight and reduce light pollution.
Several challenges required innovative lighting solutions. In areas where ceiling-mounted fixtures were not feasible—such as around sculptures—creative mounting techniques were employed to preserve the architectural integrity. Coordination of driver locations was crucial to maintaining a clean aesthetic while ensuring functionality.
Northglenn City Hall serves as a beacon of innovation, demonstrating how lighting can enhance public spaces while maintaining environmental responsibility. The lighting design fosters a welcoming atmosphere for residents and staff, ensuring comfort, accessibility, and aesthetic appeal.
